(Manhattan, Kan., June 26, 2018)—Manhattan Regional Airport (MHK) will offer a new, third-daily flight to Chicago beginning July 7th. “The reason MHK continues to be a success is because of all the people who chose to fly local, and we can’t thank you all enough,”  said Jesse R. Romo, Airport Director for Manhattan Regional Airport.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Replica to be on Display

Abilene, Kan. – The Eisenhower Presidential Library will host the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier replica on Sunday and Monday, July 1-2, 2018.
This special temporary exhibit will be located inside the museum building lobby from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. There is no fee to view this temporary display; however, regular admission fees will apply to view the Eisenhower exhibits in the library building and tour the boyhood home.
The replica is exactly half the size of the original in Arlington National Cemetery and includes three crypt covers from World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans. Created by the Exchange Club of Rome, Ga., as a National Service project by the Americanism Committee, the replica was built with the assistance and permission of the Arlington National Cemetery. Members of the club travel cross-country with the replica to share and educate others about this memorial.
President Eisenhower is one of only three presidents to preside over a burial ceremony at the Tomb. That ceremony took place at Arlington National Cemetery Amphitheater on May 30, 1958. We are marking the 60th anniversary of Eisenhower’s presiding over the burial of the WWII and Korean War unknowns.
The replica will travel to Greeley, Colo. for display July 3-5 at Veteran’s Monument Bittersweet Park.

County Will Not Need a Property Tax Election

Geary County Commission Chairman Charles Stimatze

The Geary County Commission will not need to submit any proposed property tax levy increase to local voters for consideration.

Commission Chairman Charles Stimatze confirmed Monday that the governing body would be under the tax lid for 2019 so no election would be needed. “We’re all very relieved.” Stimatze added with the preliminary numbers that are in the County is in good shape and will not exceed the tax lid.

Under state law any appropriation or budget funded by property taxes in an amount exceeding that of the preceding year as adjusted to the CPI, does not become effective unless the resolution is submitted and approved by a majority of the voters of the city or county.

It is possible to raise the property tax levy a small amount under the tax lid without taking it to the voters, but Stimatze explained the commission does not want to raise the levy. “We’re going to try and not even to raise it. We’re going  to try either to keep it the same or even lower it a little bit.”  Final County budget approval for 2019 is not anticipated until August.

Renovations Planned at Animal Shelter

Space in the back of the Junction CIty / Geary County Animal Shelter will be converted into a pair of rooms. That will be part of an upcoming renovation project at the facility.

Vanessa Gray, Shelter Director, said there will be an isolation unit and new exam room. “Isolation unit, if we do get any strays that sniffling, sneezing, have any signs or symptoms of anything that needs to be addressed that needs to be out of the general population that’s where they can go and we can treat them without it spreading so it reduces the risk of transmission.” The isolation room will also have its’ own air system.

Gray said the animal shelter is currently full. “Summer and spring, they’re usually our busiest time and we’re coming up on the 4th of July as well and that’s one of the busiest times.”

The next step in the process will be to go out for bids on the project.

Police Issue a Warning and Some Advice

The Junction City Police Department has reported that about 7:30 p.m. Saturday a parent of a nine-year old boy reported her son was walking alone near Franklin Elementary School at 2nd and Madison Streets. A vehicle described as a blue 2-door Dodge Challenger occupied by two black men, possibly in their 30’s drove by him and asked if he wanted to see a dead body. The child ran to his residence several blocks away and reported the incident to his mother. The vehicle has not been located.

Police Captain Trish Giordano said the JCPD would like parents to take the time to talk their children about being approached by strangers. Have a plan and possibly a code word. If a person does not know the code word it will be an indicator to your child not to go with that person. Teach your children and call 911 if they have a cell phone and to answer all the dispatcher’s questions so police can get help to them as soon as possible.

If you observed a vehicle matching the description please obtain the license plate if possible, and call the police department at 785-762-5912.
