KSHSAA has announced that the state track meet has been suspended from Saturday evening until Sunday morning. The suspension is due to inclement weather in that area of southern Kansas.

On Sunday the field events will resume at 10 a.m. and track competition at 11 a.m. On the track there are 200 meter girls and boys dash events, and girls and boys 4 x 400 relay events remaining plus some field events before the meet schedule is completed. Stadium gates will open at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Junction City had teams entered in the both the girls and boys 4 x 400 relays. JCHS coach Randall Zimmerman said the Blue Jays and Lady Jays would return home Saturday night, and officials would make a decision Sunday morning on what time that they would return with the relay teams. Should there be stormy weather in the Wichita area Sunday morning they could make a decision not to return.

For Chapman Mitchell Tiller was competing in the pole vault and the 4 x 400 relay team was scheduled to compete Saturday evening. Lightning and thunderstorms wiped out most of the State Track Meet on Friday in Wichita. There was some competition in preliminary events in Classes 1A, 2A and 3A and plans to have the 3200 neter runs in Classes 4A, 5A and 6A on Friday evening. The rest of the meet will resume on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at Cessna Stadium.

Junction City did not have any athletes compete on Friday.

JCHS coach Randall Zimmerman said there were lightning and rain delays on Friday. The plan is to run all events on Saturday as finals only. “All field events that were not completed on Friday will be inserted into Saturday’s schedule. there’s only four jumps and four throws in all field events. On-track events are scheduled to be finals only with two heats of everything. They’re just condensing the meet.”

The new arrangement could make for a long day of track and field at the state meet on Saturday. Zimmerman said it will be a much longer day. We’re expected to be late in the evening on Saturday. “Further delays with the possibility of rain early Saturday evening in Wichita could make it a late evening meet before it ends.

JC Post will provide coverage on Saturday of Junction CIty and area athletes, along 107.9 FM and 1420 KJCK AM.

She’s in pretty good position, she’s got to run her races when she gets down there.”
