Manhattan holds off Junction City in boys basketball

The Junction City Blue Jays ( 2-1 ) jumped out to a 17-2 first quarter lead over the Manhattan Indians ( 4-1 ) but the Indians kept battling and went on their own 17-0 run to claim a 19-17 second quarter lead over Junction City.

From that point on the game was close but Manhattan prevailed at the Shenk Gym 51-49 Tuesday night.

Missed free throws by the Indians in the fourth quarter left the door open for Junction City to rally from a late deficit, but a missed dunk, a traveling call and a final missed  three-point show attempt at the buzzer left the Blue Jays two points short.

Blue Jay coach Nick Perez noted Junction City made some mistakes. “We’re disappointed. We let them off the hook. We had them,” referring to the early hot start for the Blue Jays. But Perez also gave the Indians credit. saying, “They find ways to win.”

Junction City hit seven three-point shots in the game with six coming in the first half….three from Kody Westerhaus and three from A.J. Dickerson. The Indians used a tough zone defense to prevent the Blue Jays from getting a lot of shots around the basket.

A.J. Dickerson scored 19 points for the Blue Jays, but had to deal with foul problems. Kody Westerhaus scored 12 points for Junction City.

In the girls varsity game Manhattan ( 4-1 ) jumped out to a 28-4 first quarter lead over Junction City and rolled on to a 72-16 victory over the Lady Jays ( 0-3 ).

Mellana Davis led Junction City with six points.

Lady Jays fall at Topeka High

The Topeka High Trojans ( 3-0 )opened up an 18-7 lead and rolled on to a 62-24 girls basketball victory over the Junction City Lady Jays Friday night in the capitol city.

Despite the loss the Lady Jays appeared to show some improvement. Coach Derek Petty said he felt his team started the contest playing well. ” But then as time went on we started having some mental lapses, turnovers. I think we’re hurting ourselves more than the other team is hurting us. If we can start to limit the turnovers and the mental lapses on defense like losing our player or communicating who we’re guarding I think we’ll start seeing a bigger improvement.”

Freshman Nijaree Canady scored 33 points to lead Topeka High, while Mellana Davis had seven points for Junction City.

Junction City ( 0-3 ) hosts Manhattan Tuesday night.

Blue Jays improve to 2-0 while Lady Jays fall

The Junction City had to battle foul problems and deal with a stingy zone defense from the Great Bend Panthers ( 1-3 )  Tuesday night in Great Bend. But in the end the Blue Jays prevailed 63-35 over the Panthers. Junction City never trailed in the ballgame.

Junction City coach Nick Perez said the Blue Jays came out with some intensity early. “We went on a little run early, played some good defense, and all of a sudden it turned into a foul fest again.” The Blue Jays also had three technical fouls called against players including two for dunking at halftime in warmups.

Junction City ( 2-0 ) does not play again until they host Manhattan next Tuesday.

The Junction City Lady Jays fell behind 15-4 and lost to Great Bend ( 1-3 ) 60-25 with a running clock in the fourth quarter.

Alyssa Grygier scored 11 points for Junction City ( 0-2 ).
