Junction City leaders consider the proposed renewal of a one cent sales tax to be critical

There will be a one cent sales tax question on the ballot in Junction City on Nov. 5. If approved by voters it would renew a current one cent sales tax that is due to expire on Dec. 31, 2020. The funds derived from the tax are being used to help reduce city debt.

Mayor Pat Landes said the sales tax has been a life preserver. ” It goes right toward debt.” The current sales tax raises about $3.5 million per year to pay off debt that occurred with earlier development. “That has allowed us to continue to function as a city, and not go into bankruptcy, and still fix streets and still do great things here in town.”

If voters give their approval in November it would renew the one cent sales tax for 10 years. City Manager Allen Dinkel has noted failure to approve it could mean a reduction in services or an increase in the property tax by up to  21 or 22 mills.

Commissioner Jeff Underhill also reminded voters on the importance of renewing the sales tax. He urged the public to become educated on the topic. “It’s not adding anything additional, it’s just continuing the correct path we’re on now.”
