Breaking Bread of JC incorporated in Junction City this past September. The organization, led by Debbie Savage obtained approval to serve meals at the 12th Street Community and the Junction City Commission waived kitchen rental fees to help make the cost of the free meals served to the public more affordable for Breaking Bread.
Meals have been served on Friday nights October 5th and October 12th and a third meal is slated for this Friday night. A total of 104 meals were eaten or went out the door to people on the first night, and 102 the second night, with many of those in attendance being new. There is no charge for a meal. The only information taken when a meal is provided is a first name, the age range of an individual, and if they have ever eaten with Breaking Bread before. Identification is not needed.
The meals are open to anyone who would like a meal, free of charge. Dinner is served from 5-7 p.m. on Friday night. Twenty meals are transported to Green Park Apartments for those unable to get out on their own.
In addition to serving meals other goals in the future would be to offer life skills training including skills in basic carpentry, plumbing, auto maintenance, household maintenance, and more to help individuals wanting to increase their knowledge and hire-ability or to advance in their current jobs.
