Several of our members have called or emailed us over the past couple of weeks because they have received emails regarding invoices and/or past due accounts. These emails were not generated by us, but have some of our information on them and appear to be sent from our email address. These are phishing emails and, unfortunately, we have no way of stopping them. You will never receive an invoice from info@jcacc.org; invoice emails will always come from finance@jcacc.org. Please take a moment to read the following information about phishing scams.
Phishing is a social engineering technique usually involving communications via email, text, or social media. It is fraudulent practice of claiming to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as usernames & passwords or credit card numbers. Phishing is a huge problem facing businesses since phishing emails target individual users.
A couple of notes:
- 95% of all attacks are the results of successful spear-phishing.
- Phishing attempts have grown 65% in the last year.
How to recognize phishing emails:
- Who sent it?
- Is the email one you’d normally receive from the individual?
- Does it match the tone, spelling, or subject you would expect from this person?
- Is the domain correct (the part after the @)?
- Is the signature the same as what you normally receive from the individual?
- Who was it sent to?
- Is it clearly stated to whom this email was sent?
- What is it about?
- Is the subject and content of the email something you would receive in the normal course of the day?
- Is there an attachment or link telling you to follow it to get the information you need?
- If it isn’t something you expected to receive, don’t click!
- When in doubt:
- Call the person who sent the email and ask them.
