A gas leak was detected Friday afternoon in the area near the Bicentennial Manor which is located at 1010 West 8th Street in Junction City.

Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges said the Junction City Fire Department was notified just after 3 p.m. “It looks like right now the leak is centered underground just on the east side of the building. We’re in the process of evacuating all the residents from the Bicentennial Manor. They’re being transported by ATA buses up to Valley View Estates, who is helping us with this. The Red Cross is also getting involved in this.”

Berges confirmed 8th Street from Eisenhower to Garfield going both directions is being shut down. That shut down could affect traffic this evening going to nearby Junction City High School for the football game between the Blue Jays and Indians.

No one has been injured, but barricades will be put up on 8th Street.
