The longtime director of the Geary County Senior Center, Debbie Engel, has announced her retirement, effective July 3.
“I got my medicare card, and my prescription drug card and I’ll be 65 in July so I think it’s time.”
Engel began work at the Senior Center in 1989 as an assistant director, and then became the director in 1992. “I’ve been here ever since. Would never have thought in a million years I would have stayed here all those years, but it was good years, good people, worked with a lot of people over the years so it’s been good.”
One of the important functions of the Senior Center involves serving noon meals to seniors. “That’s our main priority I think, Monday through Friday at noon here in the dining room. And we also deliver about 60 to 70 home bound meals each day. And it takes about 30-35 volunteers to come through each week to deliver those meals.”
