Controlled burns that rekindled in the windy conditions on Wednesday kept local firefighters busy. Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges confirmed there were no injuries or major property damage.
Firefighters were called about 11:30 a.m. to a rekindle of a controlled burn in the Davis Creek area about six miles southeast of Junction City. About 20 acres burned, and there was another small rekindle of that fire in the Davis Creek area late Wednesday afternoon. There were additional rekindle fires on that controlled burn on Monday and Tuesday. Berges estimated overall between 100 and 150 acres have burned. On Wednesday firefighters from Fort Riley and Dwight assisted in battling that blaze.
A second controlled burn that rekindled was called in to authorities in the Rucker Road area west of Junction City about 1:45 to 2 p.m. Berges stated, “Went out there. That was a controlled burn from two days ago that had rekindled. ” Both Geary County Rural Fire and the Junction City Fire Department worked on that blaze. Berges noted a lot of cedar trees were consumed in that fire.
