Geary County Rural Firefighters Worked Two Fires on Tuesday

The fire bell went off two times for the Geary County Rural Fire Department on Tuesday.

The first call came in for a rekindled from last Saturday in the far southwest corner of the county. Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges confirmed Dickinson County sent assistance as well to help put out the blaze which covered about 20 acres.  “The wind had shifted and had started some additional grass, and then it went over a rock ledge and started some dead tree leaves and limbs on fire.”

In the second case there was a fire near McDowell Creek north of I-70 at a residence. Berges said a subject was doing some trash burning. “When we got on scene we found two old buildings were completely on fire and had been, and the fire was spreading toward the third building which happened to be a residence. Also it was heading to the north into some grass and tree area.” A skid loader belonging to a nearby land owner was used to knock that fire down. Riley County also provided assistance on that fire call which involved only a small area. The two old buildings that burned were empty and authorities did not do a damage estimate.

No one was injured in either blaze.
