The Geary USD 475 Board of Education was informed Monday evening by Chief Operations Officer David Wild that he may have to offer a future proposal to close Jefferson Elementary School effective with the 2019-2020 school year if enrollment trends remain the same during the next year ( 2018-19 ).
Wild stated enrollment is down at Fort Riley schools. “So we’re looking at consolidating some footprint and maybe Jefferson Elementary into a warning status, and moving those students and staff to Ware Elementary which has the capacity to absorb it.” Wild added that is just a discussion issue at this point. If Fort Riley were to receive another brigade of soldiers or the district received significant changes in enrollment any idea of closing Jefferson Elementary would go off the table.
The Board authorized Wild to continue studying school usage.
