There is proposed legislation in Topeka that would establish a new registry for keeping track of asset forfeiture funds seized by law enforcement agencies.
Geary County Sheriff Tony Wolf stated the proposal would require departments to turn over asset forfeiture amounts collected or expended to be reported to the KBI for record keeping. “It wouldn’t change anything other than it would be a record keeping thing. That’s the first step that they’ve come up with right now. FInal action has not occurred.
Law enforcement efforts along I-70 have resulted in numerous arrests in Geary County. Those cases in turn have resulted in the forfeiture of cash and vehicles to local law enforcement agencies. Funds collected through those asset forfeitures can be used to acquire needed equipment or programs for law enforcement use.
