First there were 10…now there are nine? – City Commission candidate to run “silent campaign” for office

The race for the Junction City Commission continues, with officials reporting a new development ahead of the August 1st primary.

Michael A. Morris, one of the ten candidates that filed ahead of the June 1st deadline, has confirmed to JC Post that he will not be running an active campaign for office. Morris says he will run a “silent campaign”, citing personal matters that have arisen as the reason for his decision.

Per state law, if the number of candidates filing for election exceeds more than three times the number of open seats then a primary election is required.

There are three seats up for election on the City Commission; ten candidates have filed, including Morris whose name will still appear on the August 1st primary election ballot.

Rebecca Bossemeyer, Geary County Clerk, said that there will still be a primary election.

“The filing and withdrawal deadline is all the same day which was June the 1st at noon; so there’s not a way to take somebody off the ballot now, we started mailing ballots last week in compliance in the law,” said Bossemeyer. “There’s no way to remove anyone at this time.”

1420 KJCK will host three candidate forums Tuesday, July 25th, Wednesday, July 26th, and Thursday, July 27th ahead of the August 1st primary election. The forums will be from 8:00 am until 10:00 am each day with different candidates participating each morning.

A complete list of the candidates can be found below:

Note: JC Post reached out to all candidates for comment/statements. All candidates have also been invited to participate in the candidate forums.

Candidate forums are sponsored by Coryell Insurors, The Pampered Pet, and the Geary County Clerk’s Office.
