Peyla Grand Slam Helps Lift Brigade to 6-5 Playoff Game Win Over Midwest Athletics

The Junction City Brigade trailed 3-0 going to the 6th inning against the Midwest Athletics at Rathert Field Sunday evening. But four walks and one single later the Brigade had whittled the lead down to one and had the bases loaded with Charlie Peyla coming to bat.

Peyla hit a grand slam home run over the left field fence to put Junction City ahead 6-2. Three relief pitchers came on to work the 7th, 8th and 9th innings for Junction City, with Hayden Wheeler shutting out the Athletics in both the 8th and 9th to secure a 6-5 Brigade victory.

Peyla said on the grand slam play he was trying to get a base hit. “Just swung, felt good off the bat, and I knew it was good off the bat. ” It was the 8th home run of the season for Peyla.

The Cowdin Cup semifinal round playoff series between Junction City and the Athletics is tied at 1-1. The final deciding game of the series will be at 5 p.m. Monday at Belton High School in Belton, Missouri. The winner will advance to the championship finals.

In the other semifinal series the Topeka Golden Giants defeated the Liberty Monarchs 8-6 Sunday night. Game two of that best two-out-of-three series is Monday evening.
