Sundown Salute at a Crossroads

The Fourth of July Sundown Salute celebration in Junction City this year finished $32,000 in the red. That money is still owed creditors.

A meeting of local citizens on Tuesday produced a consensus to approach attorney Vic Davis about possible reorganization of the event. He will be asked to sign over Sundown Salute Inc. to a new board of directors. The group determined that in 1987 Davis was the head of Sundown Salute when it was incorporated and there was an additional three-person board of directors who oversaw the celebration.

City Commissioner Jim Sands said Sundown Salute needs structure. “We have got to have the board, we have got to have the chair. We have folks that show up at every meeting, but we don’t act like the board. We act like we approve what our chair says and we’ve got to do a little bit more. We’ve got to give some assistance, whoever is leading this.”

Longtime Sundown Salute executive director Sharon Glessner has resigned. She indicated to JC Post that she does not want to be on a committee, but would like to remain as a consultant for the celebration.

There is also sentiment to form two committees, one that would work to raise the $200,000-plus amount needed for Sundown Salute in 2017, and another to work on making up the $32,000 debt still owed. It is possible in a restructuring the name Sundown Salute could be retained, or it could be changed.

Right now the dates for the celebration next July have not been set.
