The Geary County Free Fair is underway, with the much anticipated annual Bucket Calf and Beef show tonight.

Chuck Otte, Geary County Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent, said this the numbers for the show this year are looking good.

“We were down pretty low, a couple – three years ago, but numbers are slowly starting to come back,” began Otte. “We weighed and tagged 16 head of steers back in February compared to 11 or 12 last year, and the breeding animals are up a little bit so we’ve got quite a few of next generation beef families coming back around, so that’s really nice to see those beef numbers starting to increase again.”

The Bucket Calf and Beef show is at 7:00 pm at the Fairgrounds.

On Thursday, July 21st will be the annual barbecue.

“It’s not a pork barbecue, it’s just a 4-H barbecue Thursday afternoon/evening ahead of the Livestock Project Auction…it’s open to everybody and it’s always a lot of fun to come on out,” said Otte.
