93-Year Old Junction City Resident Ready to Skydive

sky diveCalvin Canniff, 93, Junction City,  will do something Friday that’s on his bucket list. The 93-year old Junction City resident will make a skydiving jump.

Canniff said he has been thinking about doing this for a year. He will be part of a tandem ( two-person ) jump where he is attached to another sky diver. He will do this under the oversight of the K-State Parachute Club of Abilene. On why he wants to do this Caniff said, “Oh I don’t know. It’s just on my bucket list I guess.”

Canniff believes he will jump from a heighth of 13,000 feet. On what he expects when he jumps out of the plane. “I don’t know. I’ll probably have my heart in my mouth. I really don’t know, I’m just looking forward to the experience to see what it is like.” Caniff noted he thought the first minute of the jump would be free fall.

Caniff said up until now he has never had any instruction in skydiving, but he expects to receive that when he arrives at the Abilene airport at 1 p.m. Friday.

This opportunity was arranged by First Christian Church minister Ronnie Roberts.

Roberts stated he heard that this was on Calvin’s bucket list. “And I had just previously married a couple last year, and this young lady, her fiance actually belonged to the club.” Roberts said Caniff mentioned about the same time this was something he wanted to do. “So I thought I’d get information. His daughter wasn’t for it though. That was the funny part, she said no you’re not going to do that. But here recently she said we’re going to let him do it.”

Calvin is a member of the congregation at the First Christian Church. He is a retired school teacher. He taught instrumental music at Fort Riley Junior High School where he retired in 1981.
