The Fort Riley Outdoorsmen Group will host the annual youth mentorship spring turkey hunt April 2 and 3 at Fort Riley. Experienced turkey hunters from the group will guide youth age 9 to 15, disabled, first-time hunters, or those whose sponsor is deployed.
Youth must have a Unit 3 turkey permit and are encouraged to bring their own shotgun and shells. A limited number of shotguns, shells and hunter orange garments are available for those who have none.
No hunting experience is needed. Guides will mentor youth by teaching
safety and ethics and will assist in cleaning turkeys at the end of the
hunt. Guides will arrange for transportation to and from the hunting areas.
The hunt is designed to give youth hunters an opportunity to hunt turkeys
and gain valuable experience at a time when only youth are authorized to
hunt. There will be an orientation April 1 for youth to learn about hunting
turkeys, what to bring and wear and tips about firing a shotgun.
The deadline for registration is March 25. For more information, or to sign
up, email the Fort Riley Outdoorsmen Group at fortrileyoutdoorsmengroup@yahoo.com.
