Longbine Does Not Support Budget Balancing Plan

kansas capitol elevenOne area state senator, Jeff Longbine, does not support a plan that would balance the state’s fiscal 2017 budget, avoiding a $200 million shortfall for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

The plan was developed by three senators and three house members. Longbine said he does not support the measure. “It continued to take one-time money. I think there were some over estimations of possible revenue sources, some under estimation of expenses. It leaves virtually no ending balance in 2016, somewhere around between six and seven million dollars. I think the ending balance in ’17’ i inadequate. So I was unable to support that bill.”

The plan also did not add $54 million in extra money for public schools in response to a Kansas Supreme Court decision striking down an education funding law.
