Sleet and ice pounded Geary County Friday morning creating some hazardous traveling conditions.
Geary County Sheriff Tony Wolf explained that if you do have to
drive in these conditions there are a few things you should do to reach your destination safely.
“The main thing is just slow down. Give yourself extra time, get to where you need to be and be cautious of the other drivers around you,” said Wolf. “Just because you’re trying to play it safe doesn’t mean that everyone will, so you have to be careful of the other drives too.”
Slide offs are a common scenario during weather events such as todays. Wolf said they mostly occur along I-70 and as long as there isn’t any damage to the vehicle or any other private property those drivers can go ahead and call a tow truck themselves.
“The best bet, if there’s no damage to the vehicle or they didn’t hit a fence, sign post or anything like that, they can call a tow truck themselves, because that’s all we’re going to do with them.”
Motorists can still call 911 and the Sheriff’s Department will send out a Deputy to assist you even if there isn’t any damage.
Once again, slow down and allow extra time when traveling. Practice winter safety rules, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your car in case of an emergency.
