The 180 teams participating in this years Cabelas National Team Walleye Championship at Milford Lake wrapped up day one of the tournament Thursday with some impressive fish.

Two men from Kearney, Nebraska have found themselves on top of the the leader board after bringing in four fish, one shy of the five fish limit, weighting in at 23.15 lbs. Bill Kunze and Greg Belgum are the leaders after day one.

They have been at Milford Lake preparing for the tournament since last Saturday and Kunze said that they kind of had a game plan coming into day one.

“You still got to catch them, we thought we had a plan and everything worked out so far. We have one more day to make the third day, you can’t win it on the first day but you can still keep yourself in the tournament,” said Kunze.

The two also had one of the early leaders for biggest fish until Evan Schatz of Gillete, Wyoming checked in with a 7.14 lbs walleye to claim the biggest fish from day one.

Overall the anglers were reporting tough fishing as they seemed to be catching a lot but most of the fish weren’t either walleye or they were just under the required length 18 inches.

Day two of the tournament will commence at 7 a.m. Friday with the launch at Milford Marina. Weight in’s will be held again at 3 p.m. Friday. Following Friday’s weight in the 180 team field will be reduced to the top 25 all-American teams that will compete for the championship on Saturday.
