Freedom Park in Geary County overlooking I-70 and the Marshall Army Airfield is closed.
Geary County Sheriff Tony Wolf confirmed at Fort Riley’s request the park area that
includes the large atomic cannon atop the hill overlooking the airfield is no longer open to the public.
“Late last week I received a phone call from Fort Riley. Part of their security measures that they’re taking out there on Fort Riley they asked if we could close down Freedom Park out here on I-70 at the 301 – Exit off I-70,. We got the park shut down. There is no vehicles allowed in the parking lot, and no foot traffic up to the top of the hill for an undetermined amount of time.”
Geary County Commissioner Larry Hicks says the members of the governing body were also informed that Freedom Park would be closed. Commissioner Florence Whitebread noted it was a request made by the federal government, the County needs to abide by it. “Since it’s right next door to the facility it’s very important that we follow their directions.”
