The Junction City Blue Jays took nine wrestlers to the 6A State Wrestling Tournament this past Friday and Saturday at Hartman Arena in Park City.
Of the nine wrestlers two of them did wrestle in the championship match for their individual weight classes but were
unable to come home with a 1st place finish. Both Jake Bazan at 145 pounds and Jeryl Denton at 152 pounds fell and brought home silver medals.
“We told both of our seniors,’this is not what defines you guys. One tournament doesn’t define who you are,” explained Blue Jay head Coach Bob Laster. “These guys are some great kids and they did the best that they could and that’s all you can ask of them.”
Denton did suffer a significant head injury just 17 seconds into the first period of the championship match.
Other state medalists for Junction City include Aryus Jones who captured third place at 160 pounds, Downey Wood fourth at 138, Gabe Padilla fifth at 126, and J’Quan Robinson sixth at 182 pounds.
