The Junction City High School Blue Jay wrestling team still has all nine wrestlers competing in the State Tournament on day two of the class 6A State Tournament at Hartman Arena in Park City. 

The Blue Jay’s have two wrestlers who won’t wrestle until the championship match later in the afternoon. The remaining seven have found themselves wrestling for a chance at 3rd place.

Going into the Championship round the Blue Jays sit in 5th place with 103.5 team points, ahead of Manhattan who is sitting in 6th place with 96 team points. Garden City currently leads all 6A schools with 175 points, closely followed by Olathe North with 165 points.

Championship

145#: Jake Bazan vs Tevin Briscoe (47-2) of Garden City. Bazan took Briscoe all three rounds but fell in a 9-2 decision. Bazan is the 2nd place finisher.

152#: Jeryl Denton vs Garrett Xanders (37-7) of Derby. Denton suffers a head injury early in the 1st period but continued to wrestle, and took Xanders all three rounds before falling in a 19-5 superior decision. Denton is the 2nd place finisher.

3rd Place

138#: Downey Wood vs Tylor Garcia (41-13) of Dodge City. Wood took Garcia all the way into the third period but couldn’t hold on as Garcia pinned Wood :30 seconds into the third period. Wood will take home a 4th place medal.

160#: Aryus Jones vs David Kelly (30-12) of Wichita West. Jones controlled the entire match and held on for a 6-2 decision over Kelly. Jones will take home a 3rd place medal.

5th Place

126#: Gabe Padilla vs Brandon Becker (31-12) of Derby. Padilla takes Becker all three rounds and wins in a 5-2 decision over Becker. Padilla will be going home with a 5th place medal.

182#: J’Quan Robinson vs Matt Washee (31-13) of Wichita Northeast. After leading 5-1 in the third period Washee pulled a reversal on Robinson and got a quick pin with 1:04 to go for the win. Robinson will take home a 6th place medal.

Consolation Semi-finals

126#: Gabe Padilla vs Sam Elliot (36-10) of Blue Valley Northwest. Padilla fell in a 5-3 decision to Elliot. He will now wrestle for 5th place against Brandon Becker (31-12) of Derby.

138#: Downey Wood vs Sean Taborsky (40-11) of Haysville Campus. Wood downs Taborsky in a 8-3 decision. He will now wrestle for 3rd place against Taylor Garcia (41-13) of Dodge City.

160#: Aryus Jones vs Kevin Folsom (24-11) of Wichita Northwest. Jones defeats Folsom in a 14-4 major decision. He will now wrestle for 3rd place against David Kelly (31-13) of Wichita West.

182#: J’Quan Robinson vs Alan Clothier (42-2) of Lawrence. Pinned by Clothier in 2nd period. Robinson will now wrestle for 5th place against Matt Washee (31-13) of Wichita Northeast.

3rd Round Consolation

106#: Max Bazan vs Brian Gates (33-11) of Hutchinson. Bazan falls to Gates by pin :17 seconds in to the second period.

126#: Gabe Padilla vs Isaiah Jacobs (28-13) of Lawrence Free State. After going scoreless through the first two periods Padilla picked up two escape points and held on through the third period for 2-0 decision over Jacobs. Padilla will go on to face Sam Elliot (36-10) of Blue Valley Northwest.

138#: Downey Wood vs Devin Norris (33-16) of Manhattan. Wood took Norris all three rounds and picked up a 5-0 decision win. Wood will now face Sean Taborsky (40-11) of Haysville Campus.

170#: Xavier DeGuzman vs Luke Middleton (33-20) of Olathe Northwest. DeGuzman loses a tough match that went all three periods by a 6-2 decision to Middleton.

182#: J’Quan Robinson vs Nathan Mikoleit (32-14) of Washburn Rural. Robinson picks up a 6-3 decision win over Mikoleit. He will go on to face Alan Clothier (42-2) of Lawrence.

2nd Round Consolation

106#: Max Bazan vs Kaylan Kirkwood (28-13) of Wichita Southeast. Bazan gets the pin with :16 seconds remaining in the 3rd period. Bazan moves on to the 3rd round of consolation against Brian Gates (33-11) of Hutchinson.

113#: Tanner Bogenhagen vs Jay Maxville (29-13) of Washburn Rural. Bogenhagen loses in a 4-19 tech fall.

126#: Gabe Padilla vs Alonso Salgado (6-13) of Shawnee Mission North. Padilla wins a 7-1 decision over Salgado. He will now go on to face Isaiah Jacobs (28-13) of Lawrence Free State.

138#: Downey Wood vs Bret Bergmeier (25-13) of Blue Valley North. Wood picks up a major decision win over Bergmeier 18-6. Wood will now go up against Devin Norris (33-16) of Manhattan.

170#: Xavier DeGuzman vs Reshean Tipton (31-10) of Wichita South. After finding himself down 1-6 DeGuzman wrestles back to a 9-6 decision win over Tipton. He will now go on to face Luke Middleton (33-20) of Olathe Northwest.

182#: J’Quan Robinson vs Tavarous Givens (25-12) of Topeka High. With :20 seconds to go in the 2nd period Robinson pinned Givens. He will now face Nathan Mikoleit (32-14) of Washburn Rural.
