Fort Riley officials have requested a funding allocation from the Office of Economic Adjustment to conduct a Joint Land Use Study for land surrounding the military installation.

The Flint Hills Regional Council will administer the grant if it is approved by the OEA. Gary Stith, FHRC Executive Director explained that the grant would require a 10 percent local match.

“We’ve been told by the OEA Representative that usually that match is provided by staff assistance as a part of the process of doing the work, and would not likely result in cash outlay,” Stith told the Commission Tuesday night. “It would be shared jointly by all the surrounding communities that participate.”

The request for OEA funds requires a letter of support from the participating community as written confirmation regarding their willingness to participate.

The last time a JLUS was conducted was 2006, and Fort Riley Garrison officials believe that due to the growth of the surrounding communities and the changes to Fort Riley’s mission a new study needs to be completed in order to stay up to date.

The Commission approved to send the letter of support on a 5-0 vote.
