The above average temperatures and below average precipitation has had only little effect on this years winter wheat crop in Geary County.

Chuck Otte, Ag and Natural Resource Agent with Geary County Research and Extensions explained he has some concerns about this years crop.

“With some of the warm weather we’ve started to see some of the wheat green up, but we really don’t know,” said Otte. “The very end of January we had a very good rainfall event, we had over an inch of rain for the area. So that helps, if you’re going to have cold and no snow at least you want to have moist soil.”

Otte went on to say that he believes the county could lose some areas of wheat but doesn’t expect it to be widespread. With six more weeks of winter predicted, that leaves a lot of time for things to change.
