SALINA- A phone scam cost a Salina man $300 on Wednesday morning.
Police reported a 26-year-old man received a phone call from a man claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service, and that the victim owed $1,100 in delinquent taxes.
The victim told the caller that he only had $300. The caller said that if he sent that amount, the rest of the debt would be forgiven.
The caller, who reportedly had a Middle Eastern accent, stayed on the phone while the victim withdrew the $300 from an ATM. The victim then went to Walgreen’s and purchased a prepaid debit card.
The man then gave the numbers on the card to the caller.
The victim later believed he had been scammed, and contacted police.
