The Chief of Police for Topeka USD 501, Ron Brown, will visit Geary USD 475 on
Wednesday to look at the local district’s current security situation and discuss options. As part of that visit officials selected an elementary school, Franklin Elementary, to do a walk-through to learn what to look for in security issues.
The Director of Business Operations for USD 475 Bill Clark stated Brown has agreed to talk to local official about topics on which he is a national expert. “So when we complete that meeting we can set down with our partners in this area, our own police department, emergency management, fire departments both in the City and on Fort Riley.” They will then be able to discuss the future course on security.
Multiple options could be considered in the future by USD 475 including maintaining the current school resource officers, 475 having their own SRO’s, or creation of an internal police force in the District. Clark stated, “That’s just some things we’re going to talk to Chief Brown about, is what he’s seen that works well both in Kansas as well as the nation.”
In the future staff would bring potential options to the Board of Education for consideration.
