Fort Riley Remembers Back to 13 Years Ago Today

It’s been 13 years since our nation suffered a horrific terroristĀ attack and many still remember where they were and what they were doing on September 11th, 2001.

Major General Paul Funk, 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley CommandingGWOT Monument General, said Thursday morning during Fort Riley’s 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony that he remembers the “awe” above anything else.

“Even now chills course through my body as I recall Old Glory flying from the Pentagon in the hands of first responders, on businesses, on the homes of our families, in the hands of children, and even in the glow of candlelight vigils around the world. I remain awestruck by the unified resolve that was born out of the ash and rubble of that day,” says Funk.

Funk went on to say that since the birth of the 1st Infantry Division in 1917 they have been privileged to have borrowed, for a time, just a sample of the noble son’s and daughters raised in this great nation.

“We often forget that many of whom we serve are just as brave, just as responsible, and sometimes when our enemies get a vote even more on point for our brothers and sisters than we are able to be.”

Fort Riley added five names to the Global War on Terrorism Monument during the ceremony. The names were of 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade Soldier’s who were killed this past December in Afghanistan.

Maj. Gen. Funk and CSM Jackson placed a wreath at the monument that read “Some Gave All” during the ceremony.
