A handful of local leaders teamed up with members of the Fort Riley Command Staff and other co-ed softball players from around the region Saturday to take on the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball team at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan.
The Wounded Warrior Amputee softball team is comprised of both active duty soldiers and veterans who have lost a limb defending our country post 9/11.
Among the Fort Riley All-Stars was Major General Paul Funk, the Commanding General of Fort Riley and the 1st Infantry Division. He said it was an honor to be on the same field as the Wounded Warrior Amputee’s.
“I get the opportunity to spend a little bit of time with these men and women and it makes me think about what is important in our country and just how tough we really are,” say Funk.
The Wounded Warriors did walk away victorious 17-9 in six innings. Following the match up with the Fort Riley All-Stars the Wounded Warriors put on a home run derby and also played a game against a team made up of former professional athletes.
Other local leaders who participated included Mike Ryan, Mayor of Junction City, Melissa Sharp, JCHS Principal, Matt Westerhaus, JCHS Athletic Director, Randall Zimmerman, JCHS Football Coach, Kevin Royse, Junction City Fire Chief, and Ty Arneson, Chairman of the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball team is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose mission is to raise awareness, educate and inspire the public about the strength and resiliency of our wounded warriors, showing how a positive attitude, commitment, dedication and perseverance allow them to overcome any obstacles.
