Puerto Rico Collegiate Team Tops Brigade

The Puerto Rico collegiate baseball team scored four runs in the top of the first inning and brigadewent on to defeat the Junction City Brigade 6-1 at Rathert Field Monday evening.

With the temperature hovering around 100 degrees at first pitch the team from Puerto Rico took advantage of two hits and two Brigade errors to jump out to the early lead. From that point on they were held just five hits the rest of the ballgame, but Junction City could not catch up. The lone run for the Brigade came on a seventh inning home run by Jackson Schnurbush.

It was a depleted Brigade team that played Monday evening. After a big weekend tournament that saw Junction City play seven games in five days  and win the 2014 Summer Classic tournament there wasn’t much left in terms of available pitchers. “We were gassed.” Head Coach Shane Sieben also juggled the lineup using some position players that had not started for awhile, and a small number of players were also allowed to miss the game due to the need for a break and to visit family. Sieben  noted his team was “kind of lethargic and tired,” but to their credit didn’t quit in the ballgame.

The Brigade will play at Hays Thursday and Friday night.
