Night one of the 2014 Geary County Free Fair is in the book’s and Monday night’s activities included the horse show and tractor pull.

Ray Allaman has been in charge of the tractor pull for a number of years and said that this years turnout was similar to years past.

“I think we had 59 entries, if I counted up right. That is almost as many as last year, and as hot as it was I’m pleased that we had that many,” Allaman said.

The age groups range from four years old to 12 years old.

With a pull of 26 ft. 3 in. Jordan Jenkins of Junction City won 1st place in the 11 year old division. JCPost.com asked him what the most difficult part of a tractor pull is.

“When you’re at the end and you’re legs are giving out, you just need to get one more pull in and you just feel it like, I got it,” Jenkins responded.

This years horse show featured five entries and Carly Rothfuss received Grand Champion for her horse and Cody Brown received Reserved Grand Champion.

Ginger Kopfer, 4-H and Youth County Extension Agent said that overall the first night went smooth. One thing that they can’t control however is the heat. Monday’s temperatures got over 100 degree’s and Tuesday’s high is 104 degree’s. With livestock showing up Tuesday morning Kopfer isn’t to worried and said that they have a lot of fans.

“We’re going to be fine. These animals are better taken care of at fair than they are at home just because you’re their all the time, we have ready access to water it’s right their to,” Kopfer said.

She added,”It’s nothing new. July in Kansas is hot, we’re used to it.”

The fair picks back up bright and early Tuesday morning with livestock weigh-in starting at 8:00 a.m., and judging for all different types of events taken place all throughout the day.

Tuesday evening will include a homemade ice cream social from 6-8 p.m. and the 4-H Bucket Calf and Beef Show starting at 7:00 p.m.
