The Kansas Department of Health and Environment tested the Blue Green Algae levels at Milford Lake on Monday and released it’s results Thursday afternoon and the lake will remain under a BG Algae warning.
This weeks results came back with higher cell counts of BG Algae across
the lake with four out of the five locations tested showing cell counts above the warning level.
According to the KDHE website warnings are issued when cell counts are greater than or equal to 100,000 cells/ml.
The Milford State Park Swim Beach came back with the lowest cell count of 37,800 cells/ml, above the advisory level but below the warning level. The City of Milford Boat Ramp came back with a cell count of 779,940 cells/ml. The closed boat ramp at Timber Creek had the highest cell count of 2,746,800 cells/ml. The Clay County boat ramp came back with a cell count of 208,152 cells/ml, and the rear Curtis Creek boat ramp came back with a cell count of 288,288 cells/ml.
Last week only two out of the five locations had cell counts over 100,000 cells/ml. This is the second straight week the lake has been under a full warning.
Under a warning bodily contact with the water (swimming, skiing, tubing, jet skiing) is prohibited. There are no restrictions on pleasure boating and fishing. People are asked to avoid highly concentrated areas of BG Algae.
KDHE will collect samples again on Monday to continue monitoring the BG Algae conditions.
