Milford Lake’s Blue Green Algae Warning Lowered to Advisory

Last week the Kansas Department of Health and Environment placed Milford Lake under a blue green algae warning, Thursday the warning was reduced to a lake-wide advisory.

In a release from the Operations Project Manager for the Corps of milford lake twoEngineers at Milford Lake, R. J. Harms rain earlier this week that totaled several inches appeared to be beneficial.

“The signage is going to say we discourage water contact, but really it’s mainly look around and see where you’re at and if you see areas with blue green algae obviously stay away from that. But we’re not prohibiting really any kind of contact with the water. Use your best judgement and come back out and enjoy the lake,” Harms said.

The lake is sitting about three feet above the conservation pool, allowing the Corps of Engineers to begin releasing 1,000 cfs. If conditions allow, Harms anticipates to continue making that release for several weeks which should help in managing the blue green algae at Milford Lake.

Under the advisory level the next scheduled sampling from KDHE will take place on June 23rd.
