Biplanes Take Flight Over Junction City Saturday

The skies were filled with historic planes over Junction City for the 5th Annual National Biplane Fly In.

Despite the rainy weather in the early morning hours Saturday  there was still a decent turn out of planes, spectators and vendors at the event at Freeman Field in Junction City.

Fly In officials were hoping around 100 planes would be flown in for the event, but because of the weather only about 30 planes and their pilots participated.IMG_4331

“The weather is always a big impact to our fly in, we don’t have the quantity but we certainly have the quality that showed up this year,” says organizer Jim Clark.

Some of the planes that were on display included a 1930’s Waco biplane, 1929 Waco CSO, historic military biplanes and many others.

The spectators had the opportunity to walk the flight line where the planes where parked with their family’s and take photos, talk to the pilots, and get a up close look at these historic planes.

These planes come from all parts of the country, from Colorado to Seattle Washington.

Ken Horwitz a pilot from Seattle Washington took off several days ago in his 1930’s Waco biplane to make the event.IMG_4324

” Well its 15 flying hours that I broke up over several days due to the turbulence over the Rocky Mountains to make the event,” says Horwitz.

Dave Allen another pilot that participated in the event took off from Colorado with his wife Jeanne Allen on Thursday and arrived in Junction city that afternoon.

“It took us about 4 hours of flying, got here on Thursday at about 2:30 pm,” says Dave Allen.

The event is held every year at the Freeman Field in Junction City.
