Tuesday Was Moving Day for Fort Riley Middle School

While most schools in Geary USD 475 are preparing for summer cleaning, Fort Riley Middle School is going through a major move.

School staff along with district staff and soldiers from the schools USD 475 Logosponsoring unit were moving boxes and furniture Tuesday from the current school to the new one being built right next door.

“A very large contingent from our sponsoring unit, roughly 56 soldiers from Hamilton’s own 1st-5th Field Artillery, along with staff from GCA, approximately 20 staff,” said Joe Handlos, FRMS Principal.

Everything in the school was boxed up and ready to go by last Friday.

“That was one of the goals from Friday of last week. To have each room, with teachers as part of the check out process, would have to have their boxes labeled, what location it would go to in the new building, and any equipment to have hit tagged so that we could also identify specifically where it would go as well,” Handlos said.

How long the move process would take was still unknown because they had never done anything like that before but Handlos had hoped to have a majority of it moved by the end of the day on Tuesday.

The plan is to have the old school demolished and cleared by the end of next week so construction can begin on a new football field, track, and north parking lot for the new school.
