EDC Appointment Process Focus of City – County Conversation

That appeared to be a consensus as the joint Junction City – Geary County Commission meeting on Tuesday at the C. L. Hoover Opera House, explained Mike Ryan, Junction City Mayor. “We don’t think that there’s anything there that needs to be changed. That was kind of what I came away from the meeting with.”

Ryan noted that a change in the process was something former city manager Gerald Smith had discussed. “Basically he was wanting more control, and we think that we have controls pretty much in place on how the Board is set up, because the appointments are made by either the County or the City.”

Smith had also wanted to hire a city planner that an EDC professional could work under. His ideas were unveiled in his State of the City address, but were never acted on. A short time after the State of the City and after strong opposition to some of his ideas on dealing with city debt, infrastructure issues, and EDC changes, Smith resigned.
