Man fatally injured in Salina vehicle explosion (UPDATE)

SALINA —Update Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney reports the man injured in the explosion at Jerry Ivey Park on Monday afternoon died at 2:22 p.m.

 

Screen Shot 2014-05-19 at 3.53.49 PMThe Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office will assist the Salina Fire Department in trying to determine the source of a deadly explosion early Monday afternoon in a pickup in Jerry Ivey Park, just east of Salina South High School.

Salina Police Capt. Mike Sweeney said the explosion occurred just before 12:30 p.m. When emergency crews arrived, they found a critically injured man next to the pickup. The man later died, according to Sweeney.

The explosion occurred inside the cab of the pickup. Sweeney said Jerry Ivey Park will remain closed until the investigation is complete.

The administration at Salina South made the decision to keep students in the building.

Sweeney did not know if additional information will be released Monday.

SALINA — Authorities in Salina are investigating the cause of a Monday afternoon car explosion. The blast on Edwards Street near South High School injured one man and prompted the evacuation of a nearby park.

The victim was transported to Salina Regional Medical Center and was being questioned. Police are also talking to witnesses in an effort to determine what happened and what caused the blast.
