Riley County Police Identify Boating Fatality Victim

Riley County police have identified a drowning victim Sunday at Tuttle Creek Reservoir as Screen-Shot-2014-05-18-at-6.22.15-PM.pngMatthew Mann, 25, Junction City.

The RCPD received an emergency call at about 3:12 p.m. Sunday stating that a small fishing boat in the Tuttle Cove Park area of the Lake had capsized. Once on scene police found that the boat, approximately 14-feet in length, was carrying three passengers, who were not wearing personal flotation vests at the time of its sinking.  The depth of the water where the boat capsized was estimated to be 26-feet.

Two passengers, Jessica Regodos, 22, and Joshua Jacobs, 28, Manhattan were rescued by a bystander who was able to pull them into his fishing boat. Regodos was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center for treatment of a non-life threatening serious injury, while Jacobs was able to drive his personal vehicle to that same hospital. Police confirmed both were treated and released.

A search for the third passenger was started immediately, with authorities conducting a coordinated search of the cove’s entrance into the lake for approximately seven and a half hours.  Shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday emergency crews recovered the body of Matthew Mann. He was pronounced dead at the scene as a victim of drowning.

Riley County Emergency Management, Riley County Fire, Manhattan Fire Department, Riley County EMS, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism, the Mission Township Water Rescue Team and the RCPD participated in the search.
