A Washington Elementary School choir sang never stop learning, growing, trying, and reaching as the Celebration of Life service for Lorraine Walker opened Saturday in Junction City.
The longtime Washington Elementary School principal died on April 25.
During the service, which was held in the Junction City Middle School Auditorium, the president of the Geary USD 475 Board of Education Dr. Ferrell Miller stated Walker loved Martin Luther King Jr. and she also had a dream. “That all children would learn and become whatever they wanted to be in life.” Miller added Lorraine Walker had a mission, purpose, and a drive and she wanted to be remembered for that. He stated, “Lorraine’s legacy will be that of a true educator.”
Sara Talley remembered that Walker moved many of the agencies and groups that she volunteered with. She had a part in activities that touched people’s lives, ranging from the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration to fashion shows, Boys and Girls Club, and community coalition meetings.
James Russell described Walker as a special and caring person, and observed she was a thinker, independent, and came to work early and left work late.
During the Eulogy Dr. Ellis Robinson of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Ft. Smith, Arkansas referred to a quote from the Bible at both the beginning of his comments and as he closed, “Well done thy good and faithful servant.”
The service included a video tribute with pictures from Lorraine Walker’s life.
Walker had been employed by Geary USD 475 since 1981, and had been the principal at Washington Elementary School since 1988. On the afternoon of April 25 Walker was found unresponsive in her office at Washington Elementary School. She was taken to Geary Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
