The 20th Annual Spring Rendezvous hosted by the Smoky Hills Free Trappers is Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The annual rendezvous is a reenactment of life before 1840.
“Basically you’re living in a tent,” said Randy Holding spokesman for the Smoky Hills Free Trappers. “Our primitive area its basically you’re living in a canvas type tent. Various types of ti-pi’s, I’ve seen a ti-pi put up out there, pyramid tents, wall tents, and stuff like that. You cook over a wood fire, there is no electricity out there.”
The camp is set up south of I-70 just off of Hwy 57 in Geary County.
During the day there will be numerous events including primitive walks which includes rifle, pistol, and hawk & knife throw.
“It’s a bunch of targets, a rifle and pistol shot. There will be a bunch of targets on that, and then we’ll have tomahawk and knife throw. We’ve got some novelty shots, I’m not sure exactly what those are yet. It’s going to be kind of a surprise.”
The event is open to the public. The cost to camp and shoot is $20 for single and $25 for family. Traders are also welcome at no fee, but donations are appreciated. Pre-1840 dress is requested but not required.
Saturday evening will include a pot luck meal, the Smoky Hills Free Trappers will provide the meat. Guests can bring their favorite recipe and enter a dutch oven contest as well.
