One longtime staff member is retiring, while a former Geary County Attorney is returning to the Office in a deputy county attorney role.

Current County Attorney Steve Opat confirmed former county attorney Chris Biggs is beginning work Thursday as the Deputy County Attorney. “I am pleased to have him. He will replace John Taylor who is retiring as of May 25 of this year.”

Biggs has been serving as an assistant district attorney in Shawnee County. He is also a former State Securities Commissioner and a former Secretary of State.

Between Opat and Biggs they are the only two people to occupy the county attorney’s post in Geary County since December of 1979.  Opat stated, “He will handle major cases. We’ll share basically the caseload in a fashion similar to what we’re doing now.”
