Severe Storms Possible This Weekend

There is the possibility of severe storms both Saturday and Sunday in Kansas, but Sunday could be the more difficult day.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Barjenbruch said thunderstorms could occur in Kansas from 3-9 a.m. on Saturday, with the best chance for development in southeast Kansas. Junction City was on the western edge of that structure.

Later in the day there is a good chance for severe weather primarily in central Kansas from 5-7 p.m.

Barjenbruch said activity could begin Sunday morning and move through the entire area with hail the main threat.

Later in the day on Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. the threat of storm activity could pick up once again with the most severe probability from 2-6 p.m. for eastern Kansas. Barjenbruch noted the strongest storms are expected to be isolated. “If you can maintain an isolated storm structure there’s a pretty good chance that will be a rather strong storm. We’ll also be looking for at least a broken line, or  series of line segments to develop. Any imbedded rotation within those lines, as much shear as we have on Sunday is going to be possible. And that would promote not only some tornado potential, but enhanced and wind potential as well.”
