Chamber Still Has Concerns

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce said Thursday the city manager, Gerald Smith, had not addressed the major concerns of the Chamber and its membership. The Chamber issued a press release on Thursday.

They stated that a week ago the Chamber said their major concern after the city manager’s State of the City address was the potentially devastating effect of his proposed policy for additional licensing fees and taxes.

Chamber CEO Tom Weigand said the apology on the tone of his speech from Smith this week still did not address their concerns. “We’re asking our membership to get involved here, and contact the City Commissioners and give their view of what the potential impact on their business will be with any fees, and also express alternatives to those fees.”

Among the recommendations by Smith were proposed business licensing and for rental housing.

Weigand would support a Town Hall style forum for discussion on the issue. “I think that would be one way to address it. At least get some formal feedback in a civil manner. There’s no reason to jump up and down, scream and holler, and all those good things. But we do need some input, which really wasn’t asked for before this Address.”

At this point the City Commission has not taken any final action on the proposals from the State of the City Address.
