A proposed constitutional amendment would allow charitable organizations to have raffles.
Right now it’s illegal for a church or nonprofit organization to do that.
But State Senator Jeff Longbine said the Kansas Senate is working on an amendment that would allow nonprofits to have raffles to raise money for their organization. “It is something that is needed to be done. It is something that a lot of organizations do anyway, and I don’t even know that they’re aware that they’re breaking the law by doing so. I think it’s a good bill that we need. It’s something that those organizations that have those type of activities really want.
Longbine confirmed the measure has been approved by the Senate and is headed to the Kansas House. If approved there, it would have to be approved by the voters.
