MPC Approves Special Permit for Ammunition Manufacturing

Godfrey’s Indoor Shooting and Archery Ranges applied for a special permit in order to run a small ammunition reloading and manufacturing operation inside the business at 920 S. Washington.

The special permit was approved by the Metropolitan Planning municipal buildingCommission Thursday night and will now go in front of the City Commission.

Todd Godfrey, Godfrey’s Owner, explained that he purchased Sand Creek Ammunition out of Wells, Kansas and plans to move the ammunition operation to Junction City.

“There’s three machines, there actually stuff that people use at their own home. Most people’s are manual, these actually have automated motors on them that make the process a lot faster,” Godfrey told the Commission.

The intent for the operation is to reload ammunition that is used in the shooting range on site for re-sale at the range.

According to the ATF the operation would be labeled as ammunition manufacturing which is not allowed within the central business district. However, due to the small size of the operation, a special use permit will allow the operation to move forward.

Godfrey did mention that if the operation ever does grow he will look into relocating it to an industrial zone where large ammunition manufacturing is allowed.
