The duo of Courtney Winkley and Jordan Musselman helped Washburn Rural overpower the Junction City Lady Jays 52-31 in the first round of the Class 6A Substate Basketball
Tournament at Rural Wednesday night.
Winkley scored 20 points and Musselman 18 for Washburn Rural, with many of those points coming in and around the paint area.
Junction City coach Nate Parks noted his team had a game plan to slow the Washburn Rural pair down, but couldn’t execute it. Winkley was a force with the inside game. The Lady Jays did not match up with her very well. “She’s a force inside. It’s going to take a team to try to slow her down, and our help side didn’t show up tonight so she just had a field day in there.”
Junction City was led by Akia Fain with 12 points while Kori Kamm had eight for the Lady Jays, who finish the season 5-16. Washburn Rural ( 14-7 ) will play in the substate tournament championship game Friday night against Topeka High, who defeated Derby in first round substate action 57-47 in overtime.
