The Geary County Convention and Visitors Bureau is pushing for a one percent increase to the counties transient guest tax.

The one percent increase would be set aside specifically as funding for a proposed sports complex in Junction City.

“We felt it wise to start that process now to generate funding and also to support not only the committees belief but support of the project,” said Connie Hall, CVB Director. “The sports complex is still an on going project. This will also help give further investments and things credibility and belief in the project.”

The increase would raise the transient guest tax to six percent and equate to approximately $113,000 a year. The same as Manhattan and Abilene.

Hall did say that the increase would not effect the local citizens.

“Local citizens do not pay the transient guest tax. That tax is added on to motel lodging and rooms when you stay in our lodging properties overnight.”

She also said the tax is added to private campgrounds that have cabin rentals within the county. The tax is not applied to the camping, only cabins. State Park cabins are exempt from the tax and sales tax.

The increase has received full support from the local lodging industry as well as the Junction City area Chamber of Commerce.
