The Geary USD 475 Board of Education held a special meeting Tuesday night to begin the search for the districts next superintendent.
Ron Walker, USD 475 Superintendent, will retire on June 30th. 
The board met with representatives from the Kansas Association of School Boards, who will conduct the search for Walker’s successor, during the meeting Tuesday.
Dr. Max Heim, former Geary USD 475 Superintendent, was one of the KASB representatives at the meeting.
Dr. Heim was Geary USD 475’s Superintendent from 1980 to 1992. He explained what his thoughts where when he found out he would be assisting the district with the search.
“My thoughts have always been about the Geary County district. It’s one of the greatest places I ever worked. The school board, the community, the military community, the teachers were just outstanding. It’s the best 12 years, professionally, that I ever put in.”
The KASB will begin advertising the position and start excepting applications over the next six weeks. They will then begin the screening process and will present three to five finalists for the board to consider. The interview process could begin around March 26th through April 3rd and a new superintendent could be named during the week of April 10th.
Dr. Ferrell Miller, Board President, explained he learned to major things during Tuesday’s meeting.
“This is a tremendous responsibility, which we will take very seriously and it will be a big challenge and a lot of work,” Miller said.
Dr. Miller did say that he is excited for this process, “It is so important and it is the one main thing that boards do, that will have an impact for many, many years.”
