Snow postponed the annual Ground Hog Supper sponsored by the men of the Lyona United Methodist Church, but didn’t cancel it.

Originally scheduled for last Wednesday it had to be moved due to the winter snow storm to last night ( Monday ), but the event featuring sausage, waffles, pancakes, and homemade ice cream still drew a solid turnout, explained one of the men who helped with the event, Ed Janke. “It was down a little bit I think because of the weather and because we had to postpone it once. But we had close to 400 people show up.”

Another of the participants, George Poland, noted the K-State – KU basketball game was also held last ( Monday ) night. “But it was late enough that people wanted to watch that could come early, and still get back in time to watch it.”

Ed Janke, 60, has been attending the annual Ground Hog Supper since he was a child, and has helped with the event since 1967.    The current Supper is held in the Church fellowship hall, but before that were held in a Church building that had a basement and a small gymnasium upstairs. “They used to do some of the cooking upstairs, and they had a dumb waiter to take the food down to the basement where they served the people. People waited in the little gym upstairs.”

Over the 70 years since this event got it’s start, there Janke noted there was only one change to the menu. “We used to serve apple sauce, but we decided nobody came for the apple sauce so we dropped it from the menu.”

Twelve hundred pounds of sausage, about 50 pounds of pancake mix, and 48 gallon of homemade ice cream are prepared for the dinner.  Funds raised by this event helps with maintenance of the church, which is located on Lyons Creek Road / Wolf Road about 13 miles southwest of Junction City.
